CFDA Showcase

CFDA Showcase: Rony Vardi and Leigh Batnick Plessner of Catbird

Full disclosure: Randi lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for three years, about 5 blocks from Catbird. Randi, as you know, really likes jewelry. So you can imagine that there was some serious time spent in the little jewel box of a shop on Bedford Avenue and that baubles, certainly, were purchased. Our point is that the ladies of Catbird have good taste and we already knew we wanted all the things waaaay before this profile came into being. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get down to gems and metals. While the store itself stocks a stellar selection of unique designers (including Polly Wales, Wwake and Jennie Kwon), the in-house Catbird brand is chock full of all the little things that ladies want: studs, stacking rings and personalized pieces that also make fabulous gifts. But these days, co-creative directors Rony (below, left, who is also Catbird's founder) and Leigh can't keep their subtle-and-sweet engagement rings in stock, evidenced by the wedding annex they opened for brides who are looking for something fancy without being flashy. While we usually fall into the "bigger is better" category of jewelry, we must admit that these ladies have nailed a modern/delicate balance that is impossible to resist.

Community! It’s thrilling to have the opportunity to connect with so many like-minded people.

What's your idea of ultimate luxury?

Rony: Being able to relax - mentally and physically.
Leigh: Peace of mind.

The gemstone you are currently lusting after is…

Rony: Diamonds. Always.
Leigh: Diamonds, the tinier the better.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Rony: Tom Waits, to chat about his past and his future.
Leigh: Joseph Cornell so we could rifle through his ballerina dossiers.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another CFDA member, what would it be?

Rony: I love Eva Fehren’s X rings.
Leigh: Grapes of Wrath earrings by Erickson Beamon.

Where's the last place you visited that inspired your creativity? Give us some details!

Rony: Big Sur! The sky-high trees, the locals hanging out at the Henry Miller library, the dolphins playing in the water, the waterfalls, the water stretching from dark grey to turquoise…The vibes alone are so inspiring.
Leigh: The Naples of Elena Ferrante, littered throughout with gold gleaming in the madness and frenzy.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, what would it be and why?

Rony: Miu Miu - it’s so beautifully confusing to me.
Leigh: Rodarte, for their smarts.

If you could be anything other than a jewelry designer, what would it be?

Rony: A gardener.
Leigh: A writer, or, a reader.

Be honest – who is your celebrity crush?

Rony: Jon Stewart. sigh.
Leigh: Liv Tyler and Marcel the Shell.

What's your spirit animal and explain why.

Rony: A raccoon. Stripes + smudgy eye makeup.
Leigh: A lamb with a black velvet ribbon around it’s neck. Dark and light.

What does it mean to you to be a member of CFDA?

Rony: Community! It’s thrilling to have the opportunity to connect with so many like-minded people.
Leigh: Excitement! It’s only just begun - we are new members!

CFDA Showcase: Ashley Pittman

We're relatively simple people: we lust all over gorgeous jewelry and gems, we like to poke through old musty vintage stores, and we try to fit in a great '80s movie when we have time. Hence why we really admire people like Ashley Pittman, who, after getting her law degree and working in finance, volunteered for the Clinton HIV/AIDS Foundation in Rwanda in 2006. This life-changing experience in Africa inspired her to get personally involved, and she set out to build a sustainable company that would provide employment and business training to local artisans. Fast-forward to today: Pittman's line of bold, playful accessories not only employs more than 75 people in Kenya (where all the jewelry is made), but also insures that each employee is paid with fair wages, given opportunity for growth, and are even schooled in business development. We are smitten with the handcrafted pieces, all of which feature materials indigenous to East Africa, including repurposed horn, gems and bronze. Jewelry that looks good + designers who do good things = time well spent in our eyes.

What's your idea of ultimate luxury?

Not having to set an alarm clock...

The gemstone you are currently lusting after is...

African rubies! My birthstone.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Bono

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another CFDA member, what would it be?

I am in love with Coomi's gold and antique coin necklaces...the combination of very old coins with beautiful craftsmanship makes them so special.

Where's the last place you visited that inspired your creativity? Give us some details!

I had such an amazing time in Marrakech. Wandering through the Jemaa al-Fnaa square at night is enchanting. There is a smokey haze in the air from the vendors cooking meat, families laughing and dancing, music, snake charmers, and plenty of things to buy. And of course, I could spend days wandering in the souks. The spice souk is my favorite...so beautiful.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, what would it be and why?

I'm fascinated by medicine and would love to be a doctor.

Be honest – who is your celebrity crush?

BEYONCE!

What's your spirit animal and explain why.

Elephants – for their incredible memory and ability to show emotion.

CFDA Showcase: Simon Alcantara

If you've ever met New York-based Simon Alcantara, you'll understand that there's a distinct vibe you feel from his presence and his jewelry. Nothing contrived, mind you – just pure love, light and positivity. That may sound highly suspect coming from two ladies who live on sarcasm and (friendly) snark, but seriously, it's true! We absolutely love when the product is obviously a direct result of its maker, and Simon's jewelry is certainly an extension of his, well, humanness. Look no further than his new StarChild collection, pictured below, that combines arrowheads, quartz, onyx, black agate, and turquoise with diamonds in a way that feels organic and not overly precious. Decidedly talismanic in nature, the pieces are meant to be worn every day and incorporated into your own personal style, blending in as a layering tool but standing out for their eye-catching design. It's no wonder he understands the human form so well: Simon was not only a former professional classical dancer, he has also designed for Oscar de la Renta, Balmain Haute Couture and J. Mendel. Here's to hoping that some of the good energy rubs off on us!

To note: The CFDA created an official Jewelry Committee to explore possibilities for business development, exposure and best practices that affect the industry as well as each designer’s individual business: Simon Alcantara was elected Chairman.

What’s your idea of ultimate luxury?

Spending time with my friends and family in a secluded tropical location.

The gemstone you are currently lusting after is…

Because I am utilizing diamonds in my collection for the first time, I would say the best diamonds I can get my hands on!

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

It would be Robert Maplethorpe. His unapologetic and courageous creativity, and his minimalist and emotion-inducing aesthetic is a constant source of inspiration.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another CFDA member, what would it be?

Oh that’s a tough one because all my fellow members are extremely talented and I would want something from each of them (not being greedy!). If I could pick only one then I would ask Mish Tworkowski to make something one-of-a-kind for me because he’s my friend and understands my spirit, my heart, and my taste.

Where's the last place you visited that inspired your creativity? Give us some details!

I have to mention three because it happened consecutively this summer: Taos, Santa Fe, and Bali. There was a similar “heart vibe” in all three and I shot most of the film and campaign for my StarChild collection in those locations. All three have areas that look and feel as if you are on another planet, and all three have the most epic sunsets I have ever seen.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, what would it be and why?

It would be Givenchy because what Ricardo Tisci is creating has a high level of craftsmanship, the collections are full of multi-cultural references, his casting is the most diverse, and there is a street vibe mixed in. I can relate to all of that.

If you could be anything other than a jewelry designer, what would it be?

I have done and do many different things in my life other than being a jewelry designer: I was a professional classical ballet dancer, I art direct, create films, and photograph fashion campaigns. I’ll say artist because then there is no limit to what I can explore.

Be honest – who is your celebrity crush?

Male: Jussie Smollet  Female: Zoe Saldana

What's your spirit animal and explain why?

My spirit animal is the Black Jaguar. In Mayan mythology jaguars are believed to be the gate keepers of the unknown, they comprehend the patterns and systems of chaos, and move without fear in the darkness. They can shape shift and have psychic powers. In my book, that’s totally bad ass.

What does it mean to you to be a member of CFDA?

I take it very seriously as it’s an organization that symbolizes the best in the American Fashion industry. I conduct myself to the best of my abilities to uphold that standard and to help my peers in any way I am able to.
